After much hullabaloo and controversies, Udta Punjab finally released on June 17th! The film, that is based on Punjab’s drug problem and carries a strong social message on the subject, released in India after nearly three weeks of controversies—-ranging from Neetu Chandra’s open letter to Alia Bhatt, the “temporary stalling” of the film’s release by the CBFC, a demand for 89 cuts and change of the title by the CBFC, the High Court’s support to the film and lastly, the film being leaked online two days ago.
While producers Ekta Kapoor and Anurag Kashyap of Balaji Motion Pictures and Phantom Films have already set up special teams to stop the pirated copies of the film from being leaked elsewhere, it seems the leak hasn’t affected the film much. On Friday, the film opened to a phenomenally good response at the box-office as well as from the critics. Most well-known critics and websites had only good things to say about the film. While many had expected the film to be a frivolous depiction of drug addicts and glamorize drug culture, it did not. In fact, critics praised director Abhishek Chaubey for making a brutally honest film and having showed the genuine problems of drug addiction.
The film managed to collect a staggering 10.05 crores on its first day! The double-digit figure is massive, considering the fact that the film is not a mass entertainer and comes from a niche film-maker. Trade analyst Taran Adarsh tweeted that the film’s collection was strong, and that it had earned best in North India, calling it the 5th Highest opening day collection of 2016!

He further stated that the film will collect an impressive amount by the end of Sunday, through positive trending due to word of mouth and critical appreciation. The film’s cast is jubilant and is already on celebratory mode! It was also widely reported that Alia Bhatt held her own against stars and acting gods Shahid Kapoor, Diljeet Dosanj and Kareena Kapoor to emerge as the hero of the film! Well, if such rave reviews keep coming, then we might just see a niche film gross 100 crores at the box-office!
We think, all the controversies were blessings in disguises, weren’t they?
