The most flamboyant and controversial Indian politician passes away on December 5, 2016. The day Tamil Nadu police feared millions of grief-crazed supporters will vent over the death of their beloved lady. Jayalalithaa was a household figure over three decades and also considered as a Goddess by most of her followers. Jayalalithaa was admitted to hospital in September 2016 having fever and dehydration. Many women followers stood outside the hospital to pray for her recovery. On Monday evening she was declared by doctors in Apollo hospital.

Jayalalithaa acted in around 120 films and some of them she played Hindu Goddesses. She was known for her enchanting dance and was called as the dubbed Queen of Tamil Cinema. She in the guidance of actor-turned-politician, “MGR” or MG Ramachandran became the most prominent female politician in India. MGR death witnessed around one million people following his funeral cortege, thousands shaving their heads and 30 committing suicide. This was expected to be repeated again on Jayalalithaa death.

In 2014, she was forced to step down as chief minister on accounts of corruption and she was even sentenced to 4 years in jail. In an article published by The Sydney Morning Herald says apart from corruption charges Jayalalithaa was found to own 2000 acres of land, 12,000 saris, 30 kilos of gold and 800 kilos of silver.

She had a God-like status in her party. She was greeted by her supporters and cabinet ministers by prostrating themselves full stretch in front of her. On her 56th birthday, she was presented 56 portraits by a painter who used his own blood to paint them. Fans even cut off their tongues, chopped off their fingers, nailed themselves to crosses and walked on hot coals for demonstrating their adoration for her. Her popularity was mainly because of her pro-poor schemes. Tamil Nadu has over 250 “ Amma Canteens” that provide poor people a nutritious hot meal for few rupees and can have endless refills. She had the powers to electrify a rally of millions of people.
