Whenever you need something to stay for a longer time period just put in the freezer. Yes! It does improve the lifespan of the product. However, there are some food items that should not be put in the freezer. Here are the ones that should not be kept in the freezer and the reason behind it.
Dairy Products: It might be a bit of a surprise to see this item on the list. The fact is some dairy products turn watery when kept in the freezer. However, you can freeze high-fat cream, cream with sugar, whipped cream, and cheese. Only, those products which contain 40 % fat can be frozen.
Raw Potatoes: When frozen raw potatoes turn black. You should store them in cool dry place. You can puree raw potatoes and store them for 4 to 6 months.
Raw eggs: When raw eggs are frozen they expand, causing the shell to break. They also become gummy when thawed. You can, however, store eggs in the refrigerator in the main body of it.
Canned foods: Foods such as canned foods have lots of water preservatives added. When the liquid inside the canned foods freezes it can cause the can to crack and explode.
Some Vegetables: High-water containing vegetables such as salad greens, cucumbers, radish should not be kept in the freezer. When defrosted they lose their consistency and flavor.
Hot food: Leftovers, when stored in the freezer, should be at room temperature or cooled down. Freezing hot food will increase the temperature of the freezer, result in creation and increase of bacteria in the freezer.
Thawed foods: Thawed foods when kept inside the freezer and defrosted later on, for consumption increases bacteria. Microorganisms do not die at low temperature.
Breadcrumbs: Toppings having breadcrumbs will become soft and pasty if frozen. It is better to defrost the food item and then add breadcrumbs.
Higher water content fruits: If fruits containing high water content such as watermelon and cantaloupe are stored in the freezer they become doughy.
Finally, all foods have their expiry. Foods should not be consumed once they expire even though kept in the freezer. Make sure to cool the food before putting in the freezer.
